WHO WE ARE

Katy's is a home-based sanctuary on 3 acres, that provides a loving home for old and special-needs dogs. We believe old and special-needs dogs deserve a life of quality, to be loved and cared for as long as they live. We evaluate each new dog and take care of not only their medical needs, but also their emotional needs. Many of our dogs have been through heartbreaking events and need time and love to recover and trust again. Our goal is for each of our dogs to be happy, to know they are loved and cared for, and to make their golden years as wonderful as we can.

Caring for our dogs brings us much love and laughter. However, it also takes a lot of hard work and a lot of money. Our highest expense is veterinary bills.  This includes visits, shots, tests, surgeries, medication, heartworm preventative, flea/tick meds and prescription food.   Of course, our dogs also need what every dog needs - a soft bed, toys and treats 😊!  We currently have 46 dogs, of which are six beautiful young hound mixes, which were dumped on us last year.  The sweetest dogs ever and great family dogs.  They are up for adoption.

We rely solely on donations and your support during Texoma Gives is so very critical. Our budget is $50,000 per year, and this is our biggest fundraiser.  We have an all-volunteer staff, so all donations go directly to the care and happiness of our dogs.  Please help us to continue caring for these wonderful dogs.  We are so grateful for any amount you can give.

ADOPTABLE?
People sometimes ask why more of our dogs aren't adopted. Old and special-needs dogs are least likely to be adopted, and most rescues are foster-based, so keeping dogs for a long time isn't practical. That's why sanctuaries are needed. Many of our dogs come to us as a last resort for families whose parents have passed and the aren't able to keep their old dogs. So many times, we are told if we can't take them, they will have to put them to sleep. When we get them, they are so traumatized -their parents are gone and they are in a new home. Most have medical problems and some also have behavioral issues. Both of these are barriers to adoption as medicine and prescription food is expensive and most people don't want to deal incontinence, separation anxiety, aggression to new people, etc. Those are the main reasons it is hard to get these dogs adopted. One example is Spikey and Prissy who came to us as their mom could no longer care for them. We discovered Prissy had a very bad heart murmur which required 7 meds a day. Spikey had gastritis (and later seizures) which required daily meds and prescription food. Both had separation anxiety. This video shows them trying to get to me in the other room. Thankfully, and with time, they adjusted to our routine and, while at home, had no separation anxiety (but at the groomer's Spike screamed like a banshee!).
Without your donations, we would not have been able to afford their medications and prescription food.

IN MEMORY

We lost our Prissy Pants last year. She was special - independent, tough and fearless, even though she was almost blind and couldn't hear well!  She refused to sleep in the Little Dog room, she wanted to be in my bed with the big dogs. She loved to play "pounce" on my hand under the covers.   She came to us with skin/ear infections, horrible eyes and a bad heart murmur.  We later found out one side of her heart was greatly enlarged, and she had a tear inside her heart.  But she never gave up and continued enjoying life.
