These two precious souls are Elle Driver and Dooneese. They are resident kitties at the Wilbarger Humane Society. Both of these babies came in with health issues and both showed workers at the shelter they had a strong will to live.

Elle had been under equipment at a local plant in 2017 and her sibling did not survive. She was clinging to life when she came in but decided, after being able to rest in the dark for a few days, to eat and respond to antibiotics. She is still super scared when things move too fast due to not seeing well in one eye but she loves everyone at the shelter and her best friend Yardstick.

Dooneese came in a year ago with what we thought was a clef palate or an injury from a dog. Turns out, it is just Dooneese. She never had problems eating but struggles to groom herself properly due to her deformity. She is also a fighter and has never let her sniffly nose get her down. She is getting braver hanging out in the office but loud noises still startle her.

The doors of the Wilbarger Humane Society see over 1200 cats and dogs each year. This is 10% of the estimated population of Vernon. And we operate strictly on donations. The money YOU give pays for every vaccine, spay/neuter surgery, and kennel we use with these animals. Without YOU we would not be able to save even one life and every penny you donate stays local going toward animals from this area. EVERY. SINGLE. DOLLAR. COUNTS.

YOU can help with saving lives like Elle and Dooneese, and with the projects that will directly benefit the animals we care for each year. But we have to have the funds to help these precious babies and treat medical emergencies if they arise.

Each and every paw that crosses our doors is treated with love and respect. Each soul is honored. But if we don’t have help we can’t do what we do. We can’t help those with medical needs who are being turned over to us. We can’t keep a TNVR community cat program going. Without donations we couldn’t even be able to get one animal ready for adoption.

The purpose of the Wilbarger Humane Society is the prevention of cruelty to animals, to provide a haven for lost and discarded animals in the County of Wilbarger, State of Texas, and, to provide education to the human population regarding animals and their care. It is the policy of WHS to provide humane care and treatment for all animals needing protection in the area served, to seek to return lost animals to their owners; and to provide humane euthanasia when necessary.

Who We Are

The Wilbarger Humane Society began in 1977 with a group of citizens who wanted to do better for Vernon's animals. Since day one there have been workers and volunteers whose sole goal is giving a voice to those who have none. We work with rescue groups and national organizations in order to save as many lives as possible and give every animal we can a chance at a better life. It is the mission of Wilbarger Humane Society to emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering of pets to prevent unwanted animals; to protect animals from abuse, neglect, exploitation and overpopulation; to give the homeless pets a safe haven until they are adopted into good, caring homes; to support legislation that broadens the animal cruelty laws and increases the penalty to violators and to educate the public on being responsible pet owners.
