The Larry McMurtry Literary Center is set to become a premier institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Larry McMurtry, one of America’s most celebrated authors. Based in Archer City, Texas, Larry’s hometown, our literary center will ensure that Larry’s epic life and literature remain alive and relevant to new generations of readers, writers, artists, book collectors, filmmakers, and the general public. Our center will also contribute to the revitalization of Archer City and the surrounding region by attracting literary tourism.
Our mission is to resurrect the former Booked Up, Larry’s internationally renowned bookstore, and transform it into a thriving literary mecca that will showcase Larry’s epic life and legacy as a cowboy, novelist, screenwriter, rare book collector, and artist for the ages. Preserving, curating, and making Larry’s extraordinary collection of rare books accessible to the public is also a critical aspect of our mission.
In March 2025, we opened our doors so the public could choose certain books out of Larry's collection for a $25 donation. Since then we have kept our doors open on weekends thanks to continued donations and book purchases and with the work of passionate volunteers. As we look to the future, extensive repairs and improvements are needed to turn our building into a full-time center that will continue to welcome guests and also host workshops, lectures, and special educational programs.
Please consider a donation as we honor Texas's most celebrated author, preserve his storied book collection,
and offer programming that enriches lives and enhances the community.
